Warm Homes Loan Scheme

Eligibility and Updates

The Warm Homes Loan is a government-backed loan for solar panels and battery storage, open to homeowners and landlords.

Are Loans Available for Solar Panels and Heat Pumps?

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme (WHLS) is a government-supported scheme designed to help eligible homeowners and private landlords borrow for certain home energy improvements, including solar panels and some types of heat pump.

Loans will be offered by participating lenders. Government support is intended to reduce borrowing costs, but a loan is not a grant and must be repaid.

The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is now available through participating lenders. You can compare their products and apply directly to a lender or, where offered, through an installer. Interest rates, repayment terms, eligibility criteria and application processes vary by lender. Each lender will carry out its own checks and decide whether to offer you a loan.

Who Is Eligible for the Loans?

The scheme is intended for:

  • Owner-occupiers of existing homes
  • Private landlords applying for improvements to a property they own

(Tenants cannot apply for a loan themselves. Their landlord may be able to apply.)

The scheme does not set an income threshold. However, each lender sets its own product criteria and will assess your eligibility, creditworthiness and ability to afford repayments. Lenders may have additional requirements, such as asking for an Energy Performance Certificate. Meeting the scheme’s general criteria does not guarantee that a lender will offer you a loan.

Who qualifies Owner-occupiers and private landlords (personal lending basis)
Income test None — no household income threshold
EPC requirement None set at scheme level — individual lenders may have their own requirements
Property type Any domestic dwelling across the UK
Installer requirement Must use an MCS-certified installer
Location UK-wide, including Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland

Private landlords can also apply for WHLS loans on a personal lending basis — making it one of the few routes for landlords to access government-backed financing for renewable upgrades.

If you're on a lower income, you may qualify for a grant rather than a loan — which means you don't repay anything. See solar panel grants →

Must be installed by an MCS-certified installer — all Switch Together installers qualify.

Participating Lenders

The lenders listed below are participating in the Warm Homes Loan Scheme. Each lender offers its own products, eligibility criteria, interest rates and repayment terms.

Ten lenders are initially offering loans, some interest-free, meaning people can shop around for the one that works best, with up to thirty years to repay in some cases.

These lenders are:

  • Homeserve (partnering with E.On)
  • Hometree Finance
  • Propensio
  • Secure Trust Bank
  • Selina Finance
  • South Manchester Credit Union
  • Sunsave
  • Tandem Bank
  • The Money Co-op
  • This Bank

This is the first part of the scheme’s offer, with further lenders and products expected to join the scheme as it develops. Loans are subject to the lender’s terms and checks. Being listed here does not guarantee that you’ll be approved.

Save with group buying

Switch Together uses group buying to help reduce the cost of home energy improvements. If you’re considering it, you may be able to combine group-buying savings with finance from a participating Warm Homes Loan Scheme lender.

Register your interest with Switch Together to receive an installation offer. If your area is covered, we’ll connect you with an installer to discuss your needs and provide a personal offer. Registering with Switch Together is not a finance application.

If you decide to explore finance, check the lender’s requirements. Some lenders work only with selected installers, and all loans are subject to the lender’s eligibility and affordability checks.
