Get a Grant Toward an Energy-Efficient Heating System¹

The UK government's heat pump scheme — the Boiler Upgrade Scheme — offers a significant government grant toward the cost of a heat pump installation. The amount depends on your current heating fuel, with grants of £7,500 or £9,000 available to eligible homeowners in England and Wales.

The BUS grant is currently scheduled to run until 31 December 2027, making this a great time to invest in low‑carbon heating, though it could still be subject to change.

Heat Pump Grant Amounts

The UK government's heat pump subsidy — the Boiler Upgrade Scheme — now offers two grant levels depending on your current heating fuel:

Current Heating Fuel

Grant Amount

Gas boiler or electric heating

£7,500

Oil boiler or LPG

£9,000

The £9,000 grant for oil and LPG households was introduced in April 2026. Learn how the Boiler Upgrade Scheme works.

Heat Pump Grant Eligibility: Who Qualifies?

Getting a £7,500 heat pump grant is simpler than you might think.

To qualify for the grant, you need to:

  • Own a home or small business in England or Wales
  • Be replacing a fossil fuel system (like a gas or oil boiler)
  • Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no major recommendations for insulation
  • Install a heat pump with a capacity up to 45kW (which suits most UK homes)

To get the grant, your installation must be carried out by an installer certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Switch Together only works with MCS-accredited professionals, so you're covered.

How the Air Source Heat Pump Grant Works

Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could receive a £7,500-£9,000 grant towards the cost of installing a heat pump, if you are eligible. The grant is applied upfront and all handled by your installer—you don’t need to claim it back or repay it.

Note: Air-to-air heat pumps and air conditioning systems are not eligible for the government grant. The scheme covers air-to-water heat pumps (which provide central heating and hot water) and ground source heat pumps.

Almost. While the grant goes a long way, you may still need to cover:

  • Radiator upgrades (for top performance)

  • A new hot water tank (for better heat storage)

  • Insulation improvements (if needed)

After the grant, most homeowners pay between £3,000–£8,000, depending on their home and system needs. With Switch Together, you also get group-buying discounts,  making the switch even more affordable.  Our group-buying model helps reduce the cost of these extras, too, by securing better prices from trusted installers.
